Most of the streams (usually shoutcast and icecast) have burst-buffer. That is when a client connects, the server will send around 1MB of old data, and then continued with live content. Depending on the bitrate, this can cause a latency (to live signal) of around 10-60 seconds.
The syncing (fast playback) feature in ST will need like hours to a day to get this in sync.
The feature I wish to have is a "skip buffer" button, what it does is basically seek past any buffers in VLC to the live signal. Another checkbox for skipping buffer at stream restart (watchdog) would also be nice :)

I know this can be disabled from the server-side but in some case this isn't a choice (shared server, stream from 3rd party owner, etc)

Good idea. This should (as many other things) be part of the sound card/IO redesign.
