Might make sense, DSP version uses dithering, VST version apparently not (!).....
Which probably makes sense: The more really loud sounds have played, the closer all bands have been lowered to their target levels, and hence the more they approach each other.
This sounds very convincing, for the ST DSP reproduction of highs and sibilances is very muffled.
This begs the question: does noise shaping adversely impact the open-ness (fullness) and sibilances to the extent that it's audible?
The thing is, if dithering induces audible artifacts to highs, then it's not perceptible in loud portions of the track probably because it's getting masked. However in portions where there are reverbs, sibilances followed by a brief span of silence, then the difference can be made. And it's really a staring one for you can take a blind test and tell one from the other.
Anyways I always had the notion that ST Standalone and VST sound alike and the DSP sounds different. And your explanation just strengthens that. I can continue using VST with a peace of mind then.

So I'm assuming that you can only hear a difference at the start?
Actually I took utmost care to make sure that the levels are same prior playing the track. I shutdown the player after encoding thru VST. Re-opened it and played it thru DSP. This points to something I complained before- DSP having slower AGC gain rush. Anyways I am not conerned anymore about it. I love ST VST and serves my all transcoding purposes well.

On a side note I tried Tape Restore Live(don't worry Hans, I am not gonna begin cribbing about that). I really liked this app. Didn't know about it until one of your early posts in beta section where you implemented the hiss reduction functionality in ST. Thanks for this app.

Continuing with the previous topic, Hans I honestly feel that the website actually needs a facelift for your own good.
First things first, you must realize this is NO longer a casual hobby project you might have started with. Despite the kind of software that ST has evolved into over the years, many visitors and prospective customers would get this feeling, looking at the website, that this is just another amateur-ish app. It's excellent that you are taking your time out to write the documentation. But then 'first impression can't be made the second time'. I genuinely don't want that you lose customer base just because someone feels the site is 'shabby'.
Given there are so many free CSS templates available, which I guess your hosting http server supports, please give your site a Web 2.0 ish feel. Forum members too can contribute to this cause.

Phoenix: There is something off with the DSP version. The output appears to be 16 bit (zoom in and you'll see that only multiples of a big value are used). That's not the case in the VST version.

Now the odd thing here is that if the input is 32 bits, the output should also be 32 bits. But if the input is 32 bits for the VST version and 16 bits for the DSP version, the output should contain much bigger differences.

So I'm a bit confused what happens here - unless your input file was actually a 16 bit one (potentially converted to 32 bits, but that still results in an identical file).

Winamp (and also the Stereo Tool DSP plugin) both support 24 and 32 bit input and output, so I don't understand WHY the DSP output is 16 bit - unless you used some plugin that supports Winamp DSP's (many DSP's don't support 24 or 32 bits, and hence many such plugins automatically convert to 16 bits, 44.1 kHz).

About the AGC: Although the behavior at start is different, during the song it's exactly identical, so there can be no difference in the behavior.

About the stand alone version: I'm actually not really sure whether that version runs at 16 or 32 bits... I hope 32... Will have to check!

About the site: I know. The first page start with the wrong text as well - it suited a number of versions ago, but not anymore.

For those of you who were wondering what the AGC does exactly:
http://help.stereotool.com/6.00/automat ... agc_.shtml

These are all the new help pages that are now available:
Bandpass filter: http://help.stereotool.com/6.00/bandpass_filter.shtml
Bass boost filter: http://help.stereotool.com/6.00/bass_boost_filter.shtml
Multiband compressor/limiter: http://help.stereotool.com/6.00/multiba ... iter.shtml
AGC: http://help.stereotool.com/6.00/automat ... agc_.shtml

(Note: I know that some errors are displayed. That's because those pages are not yet created.)

As a first step I've rewritten almost all the text on the main page. See http://www.stereotool.com/ .

Hans what resolution are you gearing the site for?
I'm running 1920 x 1080 and there is a lot of empty space on the sides.
Expanding the central column might give you more space to give people a better look of stere tool's features.

Gtxx: The current width is 800 pixels. That might indeed be a bit small.

I found these stats (others are similar, these are very recent):
http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php

So about 2% of the visitors are still using 800x600 resolution. Surprisingly, with 21% 1024x768 is still the most common resolution!

I could increase 770 (current screen width) to 994 (800 - 30 --> 1024 - 30) - that's a 29% increase. I would have to redesign the top image for that (but that's probably a good idea anyway). The 2% 800x600 users is only going down further. Elsewhere I found values of 4.05% in May 2009 and 2.44% in June 2010. People who are visiting the site on a mobile device will have more difficulty reading it though - and that group is growing...

That's what I use as a basis when working on my websites. It would make a huge difference.

For mobile users you could have the site render differently, or create separate pages. So that you don't have to have a lot of extra work the pages would be bite sized versions, so that the mobile users get the most information without having to scroll crazy amounts or wait for large images to load. The help pages and forums could stay the same.

If you need any help, like Bojcha I could also assist in image creation or coding. I've worked with photoshop since 2003, and have been making websites since 2005. :)
