I've been using stereo tool for personal use since the beginning of this year, I've been messing around with it alot since then and I think I finally found the sound I like. :)
But I've always been confused about some of the settings, the forums and help pages are good but don't get too in depth at explaining what each setting does.

I've messed with the pre-amp before, I used to have it at x4.00 and I noticed that I could hear the high's a lot more but I feel like all im doing is distorting the sound.

What is the Pre-amp setting really for? I know it makes the input louder, but is it absolutely necessary to have it at anything higher than x1.00?

What about using Winamp's built in Preamp (part of the equalizer), would that do the same thing as stereo tool's pre-amp?

So it seems that Hans is really busy with his BETAs, I will try to answer.
(I am not an engineer, I am a musician, so if something is technically
not absolute correct, please help us here !)

If you don't have different audio sources with different loudness,
the answer is "NO".
If so - why do you use Stereo Tool ?

What is the reason for the existence of tools like Stereo Tool or other
processors ?
Quote:
Have you ever wondered why on the radio all songs have the same volume, while if you play CDs or MP3s, the volume and the type of sound changes all the time?
http://www.stereotool.com/
The question is: what is the best concept to achieve equal loudness without
damages to the sound quality (or better enhancement) ?

At the moment Hans tries to implement a good quality AGC (auto gain control)
with his BETA builds:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1991&start=270

All versions of Stereo Tool up to 5.00 do not have an AGC.
They work with a combination of pre-amp -> multiband compression/limiting
to create a relative constant volume signature (for all kind of sources).

No !
Inside Stereo Tool there is no limitation of the volume.
It calculates internally with values above 0 db !
Only the the output of Stereo Tool must match 0 db.
This is achieved by compression and limiting.

If you use Winamp's built in Preamp (part of the equalizer) it boosts
every input signal (even if they are already at or close to 0 db)
with the db gain you set.
This leads to clipping and distortion, because all values above
0 db have to be cut away before the output (max. 0 db) !

Many of Stereo Tool's presets add too much highs for my taste, too.
But this not distortion is more a question of the multiband setting (equalization of frequency bands).

I do not broadcast.
I use Stereo Tool at home for volume equalization.
Here is a preset for version 5.00 (not BETA) I have created a few days before.
I use this for watching DVB-S television and listening radio stations (MP2) and as processing for music from audio CDs to load on my mobile MP3 player.
It does not use any $ elements !

Copy and paste this to a .txt file, rename it to
General Master.sts
and load this with Stereo Tool 5.00 !

I see what you mean.
I don't have a radio station so I don't use Stereo Tool for that purpose, but it does give me amazing control over what frequencies are finally output to my receiver. its a lot better than other DSPs and equalizers I've used before, and I like the interface too much :)
It's also not as cpu intensive as others have stated, even on fully quality. I usually use winamp while rendering 3D in the background and 20+ tabs open in firefox :geek:
lol

I messed around with Pre-amp, accidentally set it all the way up, Whoops xD. But I think I like it at 2x, it brings the high end out more. But that's all just what sounds good to me.

This is what I have now:

I do not broadcast.
I use Stereo Tool at home for volume equalization.
Here is a preset for version 5.00 (not BETA) I have created a few days before.
I use this for watching DVB-S television and listening radio stations (MP2) and as processing for music from audio CDs to load on my mobile MP3 player.
It does not use any $ elements !
Lets say I messed with the settings you showed me..

@ Gtxx

Most important:
As long as your setting is an improvement for your listening and you are happy with it, it is ok.

But:
Technically and from the point of audio quality comparisons and general standards on frequency structures that are considered to be high fidelity, you are really messing it.

Especially your setting in the multiband with all sliders of soft limit (maximum output level !) at 10 is an absolute no-go !
=> high frequency overshoot and distortion !

What kind of (cheap ?) boxes or headphones do you use ?

And your setting of the stereo image processing adds an extra flavour of destruction.
It sounds like an emulation of ultra heavy denoising (the same metallic artifacts).

I can imagine that with some desktop (monitor, laptop) speakers your processing might be an improvement.
But using good amplifier and boxes or good headphones, your processing is a weapon of ear destruction.
Sorry.
