Note: What I expect (after running some tests) is that the Loudness filter in BETA3 has a bit more 'ringing' (bad MP3) artifacts in the high frequencies than BETA3A. I have yet to confirm this using listening tests...

Based on Bojcha's observation that Slope Overlap near 100% gives the best results, I've optimized the Loudness filter a bit further. The changed filter is now also enabled for ALL latency settings (before it was disabled for 512 samples).

If my assumptions are correct, both the CPU load AND (very very marginally) the quality should benefit from this change. (Except for the 512 setting, where the CPU load is now higher than before).

Uploaded as BETA3.


Note: If this version does NOT sound worse than the BETA3A version, I'll make a similar change to 2 other filters (which will have far less effect on the CPU load, but more on the quality).


If you see the 38 kHz tone again: Can you check if it disappears when you turn off the highpass filter (eg. turn Bandpass off or set the highpass value to 0).

Hi Hans,
Do you remember Clipping bug? I found that loudness do same thing (more or less) .. so maybe same fix can be applyed for loudness? Take same song part i send erlier to check. Interesting is that on 2048 is less noticeable!

I don't hear any difference between beta3A and this beta3 at 512. In 4096 too much same.

Hi Bojcha,

- What do you mean by clipping bug? And: Is this new in BETA3(A) or was it also there in v4.22? Probably also important: Which Loudness value are you using? (Above 2.20 the new versions might behave different from v4.22)

- At 4096, what do you mean by "too much same"?



EDIT: Never mind, I guess I wasn't awake yet.

Clipping = Multiband clipping problem. There should be a filter that removes that for Loudness, but I'll check it.

not "too much" the same but "too, much the same" :-)

heh sorry .. it was 5am.

Clipping is multiband is ok now .. but if loudness enabled (any value) there is the same effect as it had "multiband clipping".
i think this is in all betas.

Ok, will check it tonight. There IS a filter in Loudness that should fix this - maybe it's not working correctly...

Ok, it is there, but it's not remotely as strong as in the Multiband clipper (at least not in the song you sent me). Still, the bass sounds better in 'extra latency' mode than in 4096-mode. Will check it...

Edit: It seems to be caused by "Improved Loudness Distortion Correction" - I had it turned off before and I heard little difference; now I do hear a clear difference.
Edit #2: In v4.22 it was even worse!
Edit #3: I think I know how to solve it... Will cause a (very slight) CPU load increment though.
Edit #4: Not completely gone, but reduced a lot now.
