Agreed...it looks ugly but if it sounds great coming from an FM radio, I'd air it. I'm taking a guess & thinking this 8100A has been modified just a tad.

And even so, it looks like the pilot protection is still over 30 dB. In many (most?) cases reception will be much worse than this anyway.

Absolutely. This is the MPX-Out of ST, received by a real-world kitchen radio that gets only 50 % signal strength:

You can barely hear some noise, and Stereo/RDS would be perfectly encodable, so every consumer would say that he/she has perfect reception ;)

As Bob says, pepole don't tune in with a mod-monitor, they tune in by ear ;)

Hey, come on ....
Is there ORBAN old than 30 years ?
Then it will be older than me :)
But i always said : in Analog way there is no even little possibility to reach the ST filter ( which is Digital ) ...... with that Q factor and Steep . you will need only for filter about 3 square meters of LC tanks :) Yeah
from 15 to 19 Khz .... it`s as little as possible space ... and as we all know , pilot must not be affected by any signal :).
I agree that may be this signal bob show`s us sounds good but..... Receiver has restricts :( and we must keep them

The multiband Optimod-FM 8100A was introduced, later to become the most popular FM audio processor/stereo generator ever made. The 8100A is the first Orban FM product to use the patented distortion-cancelling clipper.

I have a manual for the Orban 8000A (the first Orban processor/stereo generator all in 1 box solution). The test data on that particular unit was November 1976. The last game changer before that was the CBS FM Volumax around 1967...that was the first device to use gain reduction to deal with FM pre-emphasis in a clean manner. There were pre-emphasis clippers before the FM Volumax but they were brutal with horrific sibilance distortion. When the FM Volumax came in and we saw the modulation monitor hanging around 85% with consistency, we were amazed.
