In this regard, I believe that everything that happens is an error in the indicator display gain reduction (which I called VU = Vumeter).
You're right - I'm displaying the value BEFORE doing Ratio and Knee calculations. Which used to be good because they were done on the same data, but that's no longer the case now. Audio is indeed not affected at all at Ratio 1:1 so that's ok.

We can see in the simple example send before:
I know, problem is that in the "real world" there are loads of compressors that all do different things. This is just one sample. And the big question is: What's the best way of doing it?

@station-drz and others: Based on listening tests from Bojcha (who gave me the options where you can clearly hear it) I think you can forget version 020, and we should go back to 018 with 'Knee on Target' ENABLED.

This means NO abrupt stopping of the release but a slower release when there's little attenuation.

Next question is: 'dB style' on or off - Bojcha says off.

This is purely a guess: If you make an analog hardware compressor you probably NEED to use a control signal and do things like knee etc. on that. So many descriptions that you find online describe that that's how it has to be done. In the digital domain there's no reason to do it this way - and indeed, a different approach is giving 'smoother' results.

Note that in the analog domain, with imperfections and analog delays that are present, the behavior might actually also be a bit smoother (no very sharp edge at the end).

I think for the calculations should not be used in dB values, it will be best off Style dB.

The thing is: If this is indeed better, going more extremely in this direction might be even better (non-standard though). Definitely worth testing!

O and I forgot (about 018): Set "Knee on Target" to ON!

This might explain some things.
Drawing shows audio level if you play a loud beep followed by a softer beep - so the release behavior, with no Knee, in version BETA018.

Top part:
RED is dB style ON - flatter
GREEN is dB style OFF - stronger rise at start, more slowing down at end

Bottom part:
BLUE shows Knee on Target ON
PURPLE line shows Knee on Target OFF
Behavior is shown when the 2nd beep is softer than the threshold level. So the PURPLE line abruptly stops, the BLUE one rises more slowly than normally (dotted lines show the behavior if the 2nd beep had been above threshold level). Abrupt changes are bad, but in case of the blue line the volume rise is different near the threshold which can be annoying and making it configure the behavior properly.

Image

Using Knee helps here (the abrupt end becomes less abrupt) but it still ends very very rapidly, not smooth as the BLUE line does.

For BETA020 the shape is different again (top image), and it behaves as if "Knee on Target" is OFF (abrupt stop, purple line).
