--> Is the punch removing caused by the highs filtering or the mids filtering (set the 'Smoothe' slider to 0 to turn that off)? The highs filtering can currently not be disabled - I guess I should add that (and a slider which controls how hard it should filter).
I think that punch is lost beause highs protection but not sure... that slider would be good..
edit: it's removed by highs but just a bit depend on track.. so it's a actually but mids.
if i turn off Protection i have very nice puch but lot off distortion..
If i turn Protecion ON, while Always Clip-100, sensitivity-0, Do not reduce-100, smoothe-0, peek der.-0... it still removes punch, and there is less distotion.
Smoothe does not have impact on punch almost at all.
Bojcha: Previous to BETA095 or so you would always set bass clipping to around 0.71 to protect the highs. Now if you set this slider to 100% as you describe, that creates a lot of distortion in the highs - filtering that out removes a lot of high frequency content, hence punch.
For an honest comparison, I think you need to compare the sound of the original protection mechanism ("old style protection") against the new one. NO protection at all of course retains more punch - but the distortion is also horrible.
Is punch lost mainly due to reduced transitents (very short highs) or due to longer ones? What I could also do is NOT filter out the distortion if sounds are very short - actually I would guess that you won't even be able to hear that distortion very well, it's mainly noticeable in constant sounds such as 'S' sounds. I could probably easily create a filter that detects how audible distortion would be based on 'constant-ness' of the highs (I did that in the past for voice vibrations, and that always worked well).
To get rid of highs distortions, I would suggest setting the bass clipping no higher than 0.90 - above that the filtering mechanism does not seem to be strong enough (the amount of distortion without filtering at that setting is also pretty rediculous). That also drops the 'bass pumping' effect that occurs due to the reduction of other frequencies due to distortion removal a lot, and should hence also improve punch.
I really need new headphones....
