Post subject:  Garbled Audio
Hi -

I am using Stereo Tool 7.72 plug-in with an encoder, on a dedicated pc (nothing else running). I'm having an issue with garbled audio, post processing. When I reboot the encoder PC, the audio is fine for a while (maybe 10-12 hours), and then the garbling returns (inconsistent). The garbled audio is a mix of pre and post processed audio, with a little static in there for good measure :| PC specs are:

Windows 7 Premium
Pentium Dual-Core CPU E6700 @ 3.20 GHz
3 Gigabytes of RAM
32 Bit Op Sys

Any help is sincerely appreciated!

Hi Ron,

That's scary, and you're the first to report this.

Questions:
- Which plugin are you using (DSP, VST)
- In which host does it run?
- Do you happen to have a recording of it?
- Which version of Stereo Tool did you use before?
- Did you change anything else?
- Do you see anything strange in the Stereo Tool GUI when this happens?

I suppose for now you could switch back to an older version, and check if that fixes the problem. If you do, please save your settings first so you can send them to me if your answers to my questions above doesn't give me enough information (and they probably won't).

- Do you happen to have a recording of it? I will post it, as soon as I figure out how
- Which version of Stereo Tool did you use before? I've been updating right along with every new release
- Did you change anything else? No

Hm, I really have *no* idea how Stereo Tool DSP plugin could ever do this. Stereo Tool as a plugin only has access to at most 96 ms of audio at once, and it sounds like much older audio gets played in between. Which makes me think that it must be something else, but if this happened when you installed a new Stereo Tool version that really points at Stereo Tool.

Just to make sure, 7.71 was still ok?

Hans - I have had this same problem with the previous versions of StereoTool, as well. Sorry I wasn't clear on that. I'm going to try swapping PCs, to see if it still happens.

Ow. In that case I would suspect something else in the chain.

Can you describe the exact audio path? Effects like this can easily happen if you combine different sound cards without compensating for the difference in sample rates.

I have some problems using ST standalone on different soundcards for input and output regarding garbled audio as well.

And it's quite serious, but when it happens I don't usually have access to Remote control software to teest what's going on.

I believe that a "debug" option that creates a debug file for ST Buffers (input, process, output) when a problem occurs would be a fine inclusion.

After a specific amount of time? And how does it sound, horrible hiccups? If so, have you enabled 'Synchronize to output sound card' (or something like that) in the input sound card settings? Which inputs and outputs are you using?

after LOTS of time, usually after 8 or more hours. Sounds like sync is totally lost and audio frames are dropped like fast-forward, not gapping.

Sync is indeed enabled, various settings at relative adjust and resampling q. tried for the resampling value. Output is obviously 192KHz. Various buffers settings tried, including input buffering, huge output buffer. Frame size @ 4096 samples.
Watchdog enabled. Process priority: Realtime on an i7-3770 w. 100% quality (dedicated box) CPU util: ~18%, percentage of time in processing :~58%, ignore high frequencies: off.
