For quite a while, there were occasional "500" errors when loading the forum. In the last week, it was particularly bad. I've had contact with my provider and they have changed some settings - and it looks like the problems are gone now (in the logs I see 1 error in the last 2 days, instead of dozens per hour in the last few days before they made the changes). So things should be far more stable now.

Yea, I talked to them before and they just said I had to upgrade and buy extra RAM virtual memory on my hosting account because sometimes the forum software had a memory usage spike. For that I had to get a more expensive account and also pay $60 (!) a month extra for 1 GB of extra RAM.

So I asked them again - but this time not in a private chat but on their forum. And guess what - they increased my RAM limitation immediately for free. I would have moved to a different provider otherwise.

I still don't understand WHY PhpBB sometimes uses so much memory. Most of the time it doesn't use that much at all. I'm not really sure if I should trust the reported numbers (according to those, trying to open the forum index caused an increase in memory usage from 0 kB to 1 GB in less than 0.2 seconds).
