Post subject:  Some BS412-Questions

Well, I'm fiddelin' with the BS412-section now for quite a while, but there are some things...

Sometimes, it happens (especially when a song with heavy bass or strong mids is playing) when the MPX-power goes to (or very close to) 0,0 dBr, the BS412-section suddenly reduces the whole audio level for a few hundred milliseconds, and then it suddenly comes to the value before the drop (like someone has lowered the fader on a console very quick and then instantly raised it). This is very annoying, and it happens sporadicaly with all the supplied and my own BS412-presets...

And sometimes, especially with music that has no bass in an interlude part or refrain but just voices, the BS412-section raises and raises the level, and then suddenly drops when the bass comes again. So, the audio goes quieter and louder and quieter and louder... within the whole song. Is there a trick to avoid this?

And, Hans, for what is the Headroom-Slider? It's the only slider where nothing changes (to me) when ajusting...

Hello RadioFreak,

If setup correctly, the level should be almost unaffected by the BS412 limiter. Can you tell me with which tracks and built-in BS412 presets you get big level raises? Since normally it should reduce the level by at most 2 dB.... And it never raises it.

The Headroom slider determines at which level the BS412 limiter aims; setting it 0.1 dB lower will GREATLY reduce the chance that you get volume drops like then one you're describing. That's what it's there for.

These drops - if they occur with built-in BS412 presets without changing them, please let me know for which songs this happens and I'll look into it. It's running on several FM stations and I have never heard this before.

If you increase the headroom slider, this might indeed happen - a lot.

Solved!
Missuse of the headroom-slider was the case...
Now I know what this does ;) My own presets also working a lot better with this slider set correctly ;)

Sure, but when the level is lowered and goes up again, the impression is that it's been raising.
Sometimes, when you listen cloesly, even a lowering of 1 dB can be noticed clearly. But that is probably to be accepted by using BS412.
