If there's a really loud sound, it will be reduced by Loudness regardless whatever we do. So, an initial step should measure which sounds are too loud to be played, and reduce them BEFORE the actual clipping occurs. This is not very useful if the Multiband section is configured properly (there should be no such loud sounds that go into Loudness), but it might still help in some cases. And it should be pretty easy to implement. |

The solution to this would indeed be interesting. It's been sometime now that I've been trying to emulate the consistency of Orban 8600 Impact MX preset. This preset makes use of a proprietary algorithm of Orban which looks ahead large chunks of audio and tailors the output level accordingly. However this comes at an expense of some 270 ms latency. But the consistency of levels is amazing. |

Didn't want to respond about this, wanted to wait what will Hans came up with. But i don't like it at start. Atleast it just cannot be part of loudness, because what if i don't want to use loudness (?) Also it's good to look how other processors works with this problem. In BBP there are 2 compressors before and after multiband. (actually it's triple). They (beside other things) are doing this "protection". Also, Multiband limiters are look-ahead, so they are doing half job already. No need for 200+ms look ahead, enough is ~10-15 ms, enough to give you about same amount slower limiter/compressor. And with 100ms you can make -- whatever. Test: just look-ahead for single band compressor or/and agc2 - so there will be no need to use 37242 'down speed" to fix this problem and totally ruin all other sounds, so down speed can be lowered. Ofcourse, this is NOT solution! Solution should be better.. |

Hm, we're talking about 2 completely different things here. The protection that I was talking about will not affect the loudness - or actually, it might, but if it does it will only increase it. Basically, say you have a very loud tone at +6 dB. After clipping, no more than 2.1 dB (if I'm not mistaking - I might be...) can remain, even if I would not filter out anything. Now if I reduce that tone to 2.1 dB *before* clipping (Loudness), it does protect other sounds against the loud tone a bit - without affecting the output level of that tone. Actually this is a lot like highs and lows protections that are already built in, but more generic. |

exactly... but what settings of multiband you think will not give that additional +6dB ..or more?Which preset have such settings?
