It actually is done! Or at least in the United States and Canada. I was doing some research and found out that such a curve exists for AM in North America. The curve was standardized by the NRSC (National Radio Systems Committee) in 1988 and it calls for a cutoff of 10,600 Hz in the treble for the prevention of splatter on adjacent frequencies. They call it a modified 75 uS curve when in reality its very close to the 50 uS curve used for FM in Europe and some other areas. A number of receivers have the appropriate de-emphasis network built into them for this but its mostly the AMAX certified receivers that also get AM stereo through the Motorola C-QUAM system. I think that with some tweaking it might be possible to match said curve but who knows.

Wow. I always thought AM audio was limited to 5 KHz.
