Wow, thanks for your quick response. I've been looking at ways to get more volume from my AM transmitter, and whilst Stereo Tool is able to get good volume by using multiband compressors, it just doesn't compare to the louder commercial stations (unless I overmodulate my transmitter, causing distortion and splatter). The phase rotator doesn't really seem to do much to help with the negative peaks. Also I couldn't find any Winamp plugins that can perform APL. I was considering implementing this hardware APL circuit http://www.bruhns.us/APL/APL.html, but being too lazy, I thought I might suggest a new feature for ST. It means less hardware, and software might perform a better job than analogue electronics. That particular circuit has a polarity switch, so hopefully you can also implement something similar in ST. |

Don't start celebrating too soon: I've put it on the requested features list because it's a good idea - but there are lots of other things here and it will take time! I suppose you did use the Loudness filter? Because that by itself should increase the output level by at least a factor 2. (The only thing is that Loudness would perform better if it would only need to clip one side.) |

I have considered using the loudness settings, but it found it will not achieve a higher modulation depth, but instead result in a lower peak-to-average ratio. It simply causes the material to sound overly compressed, with tiring audio. I would prefer to have more dynamic range by having up to 120% or even 130% positive peaks whilst maintaining negative peaks of under 100%. |

I'd just like to say that an asymmetrical peak limiter would be an awesome feature for Stereo Tool to have. To the best of my knowledge, the cheapest option that one can easily get for an asymmetrical peak limiter is an Inovonics 222, and for those of us with part 15 AM stations, that's a very expensive option indeed, and without an asymmetrical peak limiter, it's almost impossible to get a good punch to AM audio. A asymmetrical peak limiter would really put Stereo Tool into a class of its own. I hope one is implemented soon. |
