Soundmanfm: Ok, yesterday I just performed some measurements and I though that my band 3 setting changes for band 3 were ok. But now I'm listening to it and I hear what you mean by vibrations - it's pretty bad. Other question: The .STS file that you sent me, does that sound ok to you? And if so, in which version? (BETA or BETA2?) |

Soundmanfm: Since you're saying that the latest beta has worse highs than version 5.00, I've compared version 5.00 with the latest BETA (*NOT* BETA2!). With AGC and Noise Gate turned OFF the two are 100% identical (Assuming no very wild settings in the first few multiband bands; there was a bug in version 5.00 if you did that). The differences are: * Noise Gate in BETA is a bit different because the lowest band is turned off. This has no effect on the highs (not even if all the filters are turned on), only a bit on the lows. This cannot be what you're hearing (if anything, the bass will get slightly louder, no further effects). * AGC (tested with 2 bands in both versions) output level and response speed is different The FREQUENCY CONTENT is again completely identical (except maybe a difference between below 200 Hz and above 200 Hz, but that wouldn't explain excessive highs). However, the changed (higher!) OUTPUT LEVEL might have a big impact on the sound: A higher output level increases the effect of Multiband (and all other filters coming after that) on the sound. I've tried to measure the difference in output volume between versions 5.00 and the latest BETA, but I'm getting conflicting results. If I use 1 band, the BETA output is on average 2.5 dB softer in BETA, but if I use 2 it's louder. I'll try to figure out what's going on here, because this doesn't look good. (Still, it shouldn't affect the sound quality, or amount of highs, except by overdriving Multiband too much). In short, for now, this means that by changing the level of 'target output level' in AGC, you can get (nearly) IDENTICAL output in BETA as in 5.00, both with 1 or 2 bands |

Interesting notion about "S" sounds. I've compared version 4.22 vs. 5.00 as follows: - FM Loud Bass Boost preset of version 4.22, without Pre Limiter and Noise Gate - Processed in both versions - Then took the left channel of both versions, put one on the left channel, the other on the right - Listened to the result on my headphones For most of the sound, I didn't hear any difference. Except for loud S sounds! They were indeed (very slightly) better in version 4.22. So people who complained about this were right (although I must add that the difference is VERY small, even with A/B comparisons I cannot really hear the difference. I only notice something when I play both simultaneously on different channels.) Then I compared the volume and frequency content. Version 5.00 is slightly softer than version 4.22 (0.1 dB, probably due to the improved Hard Limit quality). But... The highs were at the same level! After doing some tests I found that with an 'Allow louder highs' value of -15000 (yes, minus!) the frequency content is identical, and I cannot hear differences anymore in the "S" sounds. So I will lower the default level of this slider and allow negative values. I'm not really sure yet if this is really the perfect solution; I'll do some more tests to find out if there are any other differences that I missed. |

I started "playing" a bit. I love the behavior of the three band AGC. This allows for much tighter control of sibilance. |

Hi SuperH,Are you working with BETA or BETA2? They behave very differently... (Actually I think BETA2 is pretty bad at the moment I'm getting all kind of weird effects if I set the up/down speed at higher levels. I think there must be a bug somewhere...) |
