I may have a solution for the "unnatural bass" problem.
I went back to the original problem: Very loud bass sounds cause distortion, and due to that it's not possible to feed the Loudness filter with very loud bass peaks. So the bass needs to be set at a lower level to get a good quality sound.
I have now changed the range of the limiter max value - you can now set it to values up to 200% instead of 100%. 100% means that before the Final Limiter and Loudness filter, the bass level is limited to 100% of the maximum possible output amplitude. So at 200% the bass is still twice as loud as the maximum output level can be, and Loudness needs to handle it.
So now the order is changed to the opposite of what it was before: Instead of limiting the loudness to a low enough level immediately, the new method limits the very loud peaks and then relies on the old Loudness filter to handle the remaining peaks.
How to use it:
Default values are now: Max frequency: 125 Hz, Max Level: 140% (!). You can set "Allow louder lows" to values between 1250 and 2500 without getting a lot of distortion (about equal to that of the original 4.10 version, but you'll get more lows).
I have also changed the way the new slider works, it's now basically a bass boost filter for very low (up to about 70 Hz) frequencies. It still causes the same type of distortion, but as it turns out, for very low frequencies this is not very disturbing - and it DOES increase the very deep bass level by about 1 dB. (
The default value is set to 100%, should probably be 0%...)
The advantage of this method:
- New limiter now limits at 140%, so nowhere near the 70-80% you were talking about. It still removes very loud peaks (note: I've tested that at a Loudness value of 4 (!), you should probably set the limit a bit lower for lower Loudness values).
- The sound is basically the sound of the original 4.10 version, without the distortion caused by very loud peaks. So increasing the bass level using the equalizer is possible now. Also, the "allow louder lows" slider can be set higher, which immediately leads to more lows. (Having said that, there are slightly less lows than in the original 4.10 version if this slider is set to 0.)

Note: The default values that I mentioned in this post were just some numbers that I thought might sound fine, I haven't yet fine-tuned them. It's past 4AM here, so I really need to end it for today...
