I've added a mode where a sweep comes out much flatter. But: I don't like it at all when I use it with music. It sounds less full and less alive, more 'steril'. Maybe it can be adjusted by changing the MB settings but if you switch an existing preset it really damages the quality.

So I decided to do the same test with the old multiband, and that too sounds fuller with the 'Flat frequency response' setting disabled.

I'll put it in for now for testing. But I'll keep the default value at 'Off'.

Some good progress today: MB bands are more linear now with little effect on the sound; burst protection now uses some look-ahead, SCA is re-enabled. Will check the AGC next.

Hans,

Does the look ahead introduces extra latency ?
This might be important for onair purposes.

Jeroen.

Look ahead of 10-20 samples will not be noticeable in latency.

No

But it will only be a very limited amount of lookahead (at most 2 ms or so).

Hans,

every day a little bit better........the last beta sounds very good.........

keep up the good work...

Update: after switching to multiband ST crashed, try it for 4 or 5 times (load preset self made and switch to muliband)

Following up on my reported issue with BETA044 and the Classic Multiband showing substantially more compression.

This is a material change, not a cosmetic change.

Proof:

 Same preset used in both tests.

BETA041
-----------------------------------------------
Statistics for: 041_Wacka Flocka Flame Ft_ Roscoe Dash & Wale- - No Hands.wav
Number of Samples: 11573345
-----------------------------------------------

left right

Peak value: -0.17 dB --- -0.03 dB
Avg RMS: -9.60 dB --- -9.69 dB
DR channel: 8.55 dB --- 8.69 dB
-----------------------------------------------

Official DR value: DR9
===============================================

BETA044
-----------------------------------------------
Statistics for: 044_Wacka Flocka Flame Ft_ Roscoe Dash & Wale- - No Hands.wav
Number of Samples: 11573345
-----------------------------------------------

left right

Peak value: over --- 0.00 dB
Avg RMS: -8.41 dB --- -8.52 dB
DR channel: 7.52 dB --- 7.74 dB
-----------------------------------------------

Official DR value: DR8
===============================================

BETA044 is producing output that is roughly 1 dB RMS louder.

Turns out (ooow I feel so stupid now) that in beta044, the AGC output only contained band 1 - I had changed that for testing and hadn't restored the old settings anymore... Took some A/B'ing between the old and new code to figure out what was wrong.

Changing the number of bands in the new multiband compressor no longer causes crashes.

So I'm building a new version now.

Stand alone: http://www.stereotool.com/download/ster ... 04-045.exe
Winamp DSP: http://www.stereotool.com/download/dsp_ ... 04-045.exe
VST: http://www.stereotool.com/download/vst_ ... 04-045.dll

- MB: "Fast Attack" mode is not ONLY used when the volume is really dropped a lot. I think that the configurable release multiplier for this mode can be removed again, it will probably sound best if you keep it at 1.
- MB: "Linear frequency response" added; if you set this above-0 the frequency response of a sweep will be more linear (less big spikes on crossovers). Note: If you set it very high, the audio can be strongly affected and the linearity can actually become *less* good. Which is weird.... So I would suggest never setting this slider above 50%; default is at 33%.
- MB: Changing number of bands will no longer cause crashes
- AGC: Problem in BETA044 fixed - it used only 1 band in the output there!

MB with the burst protection works really well, only I now think I should add some small amount of look-ahead (2 ms might already suffice) to improve the handling of the start of loud spikes. But at this moment they should be rare already.

What do the new double graphs for the bands mean?
