UPDATE The redesign didn't work out... But I found another solution: I have added a filter that detects high frequency distortion and reduces the bass level a bit when it occurs. So if there is no highs distortion, the bass level is untouched. ![]() The bass level is now nearly identical to that of the 27/5 release that was still using the old (less balanced, "edgy highs") Loudness algorithm, but this version has even less highs distortion than that version had. (And no-one ever complained about it in that version...). Ok, I'm a bit lost now... An hour ago it sounded better than the 27/5 version, now it sounds crappy. Will get back on this... |

to be clear .. This is not constant high tones distortion... it's far away from that. but when higher bass and higher high tone comes in exact same time (like bass and male/female "S" or Bass and crash) .. then that high tone vibrates. i fire up Breakaway again... and put same tast songs.. things are even worse. First overall level is lower a bit (compared FM Europe form ST and Breakaway Reference Settings) To achive same level as ST.. must up power .. then highs start to be very bad. ... But i must admit that Breakaway have just a bit better bass .. but maybe that is reason for all. For a reason i said that i was wonder how will Hans do this. |

I still think that it's possible to get rid of (most of) the distortion... It won't be easy though... I have a new idea that I'll try out tomorrow. If everything else fails I might have to go back to the 27/5 version - but that version wasn't perfect either and it had some other effects that I (and other people here) didn't really like. Note: Better bass is easy - but at a cost... As you have heard. Better highs is easy too - if I reduce the bass level enough. The hard thing is to create a good bass without a lot of distortion. |

UPDATE I have a new version ready that sounds much better. Bass level is nearly identical to the one with the distortion (about 0.1 dB softer), but most of that distortion is gone... Also I have added a slider to choose between loud deep bass sounds or a bit less bass with cleaner highs. Basically this is a combination of all the different types of processing and settings from the last few versions. It should combine the good parts of each of those versions. For example, I'm using 2 different methods to determine whether distortion occurs, and I only lower the bass volume if both methods say that it does. This also seems to give a more constant output volume, which is good. Some minor tweaking might still be possible to increase the bass level a bit more - I might check that later. This value is NOT yet saved to disk, so you'll need to set it each time you start Stereo Tool. 2. Bojcha, I'm curious up to which value you find the distortion acceptable... That's with the normal bass and highs sliders at 0. I still need to choose a default value, so feedback on this is welcome. (Note: You cannot read the exact value, but you can for example estimate where it is on a scale from 0 to 1). |
