Ok, pre-emphasis itself doesn't have any effect on the highs (it just boosts them), but it does make things more difficult for Loudness which must then cope with those louder highs. So that would mean you're still pointing at Loudness...

By 'reducing the highs before the AGC' I meant in the side band I guess you mean the same thing!

Hard Limit and Composite Limiter should not have too much problems with louder S sounds (their effect is very limited anyway)... I'll check it later.


(Hm... Composite Limiter might have more issues with loud highs if they are also different between the left and right channel... If that's not the case it shouldn't be much harder than any other sound)

Just compared b19 and b20.
- b19 cleaner but more volume drop.
- b20 much less volume drop but bit smashed highs

hmm.. my vote is b20

You can try with my special preset created for default *no processing* FM

In my ears, the b20 the highs are allot better! Also big compliments on the AGC!

Hm, I think I'll make this configurable (the amount of extra 'S' headroom).

Oddly, the 'S' sound itself should actually be cleaner instead of messier - the reason is that I DON'T process the highs differently, instead I'm allowing some distortion on the lows and mids

(Maybe I've overlooked something, I'll check the differences in code between the 2 versions to see if I left any --------------

BRAINFLASH (yes that weird word again): I might know what the difference is! Will attempt to change it back while keeping the louder highs.

Does Loudness Looks ahead ?

Ok, not sure if this is better (the difference in heighs is small), but I've restored one value that I changed in BETA20 in an attempt to get louder highs, but it didn't really have an effect. Actually I would expect it to sound BETTER with that change, but I'll post a build with the original setting in a moment for comparison.

It operates on a block (96 ms) of data at once, with some steps that work on shorter pieces. None look ahead (and given the algorithm they shouldn't and cannot).

Well... afaik all FM processor can't live without That Last step "limiter with Look ahead"
Actually in ST last step is 'hard limit' but main is loudness. So maybe is smart to start to think in that direction.

Another question ..
I am listening (and watching) MPX from ST, and i see that without Composite Limiter ST do not use whole 100% of deviation.
At least, this loud highs must use maximum avaliable space. Even with composite limiter at 105%, just sometimes react.
With 120% things are much better .. but there is MPX artifacts then.

Hans, does less bands in the multiband compressor help to get the highs more under control?
