Hans,
Are you sure that beta16's RMS (improved) will give the same output as beta15's Traditional RMS? Somehow beta15's output sounds far more constant that beta16 in the new RMS mode.
Were there changes other than performance optimizations which necessitate a recalibration of from a preset saved in beta15? All I did was replace all instances of
Code:
Traditional RMS
with
Code:
RMS (improved)
. Anything else?

Edit: Hmm, let me confirm once more. Doing an A/B comparison, the two versions sound little different...may be the bass.

@phoenix: They should be perfectly identical. I have no time to check it now (I did check it for every change that I made but maybe I missed something).

It seems to me that the new RMS sounds stiffer than the old RMS. The new attack behaviour is different and seems to kill the transients more. It's especially noticeable on the high bands, Slowing down the attack made the sound brighter but didn't improve the transients.

Hm that might be true. Have you tried setting the RMS block size for those highest bands smaller? That might help a lot...

clearly helps ;)

I'm still using beta 15 to test as that's the last version that had the old RMS. I made a version of Sparkle with the top 3 bands switched to Traditional RMS, the threshold and limit of those 3 bands increased by 1.75 dB, and the RMS blocksizes set to 0.1. The output still sounds duller than the version with the old RMS.

There's another change that was missing: The SB compressor at the end used (normal) RMS mode. This is converted to RMS (compatibility) in the new version - but it's indeed quite different in behavior. Oddly, I'm getting MORE higher in the new version instead of less.

If I remove the SB compressor, the two versions (with Traditional RMS in BETA015 and RMS in BETA016) are nearly identical (the difference is in the lows, because they used Peak and now use what was Traditional Peak in 015, difference is a few tens of a dB).

I was not comparing the Traditional RMS and the Improved RMS. I was comparing the old RMS with the new compatibility mode using beta 15 and both of the sts files in the zip are intended to be used in beta 15. That's why I increased the thresholds in the new RMS version by 1.75dB to simulate beta 16's compatibility mode behaviour in beta 15. When used in beta 15 the only different between the two versions is that the new RMS version had its top 3 bands changed to simulate the compatibility mode in beta 16. The lower 2 bands and the singleband still use the old peak and old RMS so there's no difference there.

Windows stand alone: http://www.stereotool.com/download/ster ... 32-017.exe
Winamp DSP: http://www.stereotool.com/download/dsp_ ... 32-017.exe

- Improved limiter attack and release behavior. See new 'Limiter maximum release' slider. (Difference is pretty big, the resulting signal is much tighter and pumps less; if I only use the limiter it's also about 0.75 dB louder than before with the same peak level).

Set the new slider at the maximum value for behavior that's closest to the old behavior (but I would not advise doing that).

The Improved limiter attack and release behavior, really works well.

@hvz: it could lower the maximum gain of Band Mix in the MB, for better presicion at low values?
