Quote: That cannot be true.. watch how much 1st band drops when bass at Beyonce's song kicks at ~30Hz.
Well, due to the nature of filtering, it's difficult to precisely determine the amplification at each frequency. So it could be that the bass is counted louder than it should. The beats in this song are at 43 Hz. At 40 Hz, for ITU-1770 I should lower the level by 5.6 dB; at 50 Hz that's 4.0 dB. So at 43 Hz it's probably around 5.2 dB. Edit: I just realized that I built in something to avoid artifacts in the RMS measurements - which might lead to a less than required volume drop at very low frequencies... Will check if fixing that improves things (don't expect too much from it though, and fixing it might introduce artifacts) Quote: it should drop, but not that much! but again, multiband is droping that bass alot. That's true too.
Maybe, but the rest of the sound doesn't drop - and it does already sound a lot better than when I was using RMS levels. And, for many other tracks, the bass is actually protecting the rest of the sound against volume drops when a loud voice kicks in.Quote: hmm maybe first two bands in multiband need same thing
Noooo! That would kill all the other processing steps! And, except for that, if you want more audio to come out of those first bands, just increase their 'soft limit' settings - that's basically identical to reducing how strong a frequency counts!![]() Quote: don't BAN it !

ok. Well i found another bad thing... This "Response time" is only good for songs, but bad for short tracks, comercials and/or any short track especially if that tracks are louder then previous. Anything over 1 or 2 sec is not good for this. ITU specs and "remove remaining peeks" works nice. Don't ban it! - You said that that song should be baned, erlier ![]() |

Quote: Well i found another bad thing...
I don't think there's a good way to solve this... If I respond faster, then things like a sudden loud voice in a song can also cause fast volume drops, which sound very annoying. Actually, that's why larger time frames are better: A loud burst of sound will have very little impact on the output volume unless it continues for a long time (and then still the effect kicks in slowly). This "Response time" is only good for songs, but bad for short tracks, comercials and/or any short track especially if that tracks are louder then previous. Anything over 1 or 2 sec is not good for this. The best I can come up with is this: - Increase 'up speed' a bit (*) - Lower 'down speed' a bit (*) - Lower the smoothing level to 120%, or even 115% This way the volume effect of smoothing doesn't exceed 1.5-2 dB. Loud recordings will still be a bit louder when they start - but at least the volume boost (in previous settings upto 3.4 dB) isn't that much anymore. New version will have different default settings. (*) This reduces the difference between already compressed and not yet compressed songs! I may also have another idea to improve this... There is currently a hold time when the volume is dropped. I can remove that, so the volume starts to rise immediately. |

New version online (BETA). Changes: - Very low bass was still being counted a bit too strongly in the AGC, now it's been reduced further - "Hold time" on the AGC reduced to 1/6th of what it was before: This greatly reduces the difference in volume between heavily compressed and non-compressed tracks. - Many AGC default values have been updated. Make sure to hit 'RESET' first! Among others, the 'maximum volume boost' has been decreased to 110% - which appears to be enough now! I'm really curious if this doesn't affect the sound in a bad way - volume is increasing much sooner than before now, which leads to far more volume level changes in the AGC. Still it doesn't really seem to cause pumping etc. (And anything it does cause should be removed by Multiband). Video Phone. It has some really insanely loud bass in parts of the song, but not in other parts. Before this caused *huge* differences in output level. (And it still does if you select 1 band processing).

Damn. Now this Celine Dion (My heart will go on) song sounds crappy again (volume going up and down all the time). I'll try the following method later to get rid of this effect: A = Volume with hold time (previous BETA versions) B = Maximum allowed output level for current sample C = Level used the last time the level was dropped Then, for every sample, use the following volume: max(A, min(B, C + 1 dB)) ![]() The "+1 dB" should reduce the level differences, but should be small enough to be not (or hardly) noticeable. Or I could make the hold time configurable... (Creating a good AGC is a lot harder than I expected...... ![]() |

Quote: Damn. Now this Celine Dion (My heart will go on) song sounds crappy again (volume going up and down all the time). I'm starting to think that I need to combine the 2 methods: Keep track of the volume both with and without 'hold time', and then use the minimum of the version with hold time plus a bit and the version without hold time.
![]() Maybe make the AGC fully configurable - attack time, rise time, hold time? Then, you can blame the users. ![]() Attack time = time to attenuate once the volume is above a threshold Hold time = time to hold the attenuation before the threshold is crossed Rise time = time to release the signal from attenuation I think I have it sounding decently, when I set a low threshold (-14.28dB RMS/"20"), gated at +3. After thinking a bit more about this, I'm now starting to think that maybe I should just leave things as they are. The solutions that I described in my previous post will probably work, and be hardly noticeable, but still, it reduces the dynamic range of the recording. Which is bad. Other solutions will probably always have similar issues. Without looking ahead, it's impossible to know if a loud sound is a bass kick - with low level sounds coming afterwards - or the start of a really loud compressed track. If I don't lower the volume very quickly, the start of a really loud compressed track will be too loud for a too long period. If I lower it too quickly and don't do anything about it afterwards, single loud kicks among softer sounds lead to a too low level for the entire track. Quickly increasing the volume after a loud kick to compensate for this leads to reduced dynamics. The 'RMS smoothing' feature can only be used for very small corrections, because otherwise the volume changes will be clearly noticeable. Maybe a small difference in output level is less bad than all of this. |
