Congrats Hans...
what "limiting strichnes" controls and whats the best value ???
Hi Chris,

Maybe I should rename it to 'Limiting aggressiveness'. Basically, if you set it higher, it limits much stronger - at the risk of causing artifacts (even if in the end it doesn't result in a lower peak level!)

If it doesn't limit hard enough, you'll get spikes, which will have to be removed by Hard Limit, causing both some artifacts and a drop in output level.

I've found that at '10%' it limits nearly as good as at 100% (so causes nearly no extra Hard Limit artifacts), except for 'difficult sounds' such as xylophones - those rare sounds can then be handled by Hard Limit, causing a (very small) drop in volume instead of artifacts, which is good.

I haven't really tried different values, so maybe 9% or 11% is better, or maybe even 5% is as good as 10%... So I still need to tweak this value.

Nothing interesting has changed. There was a minor issue with the new 'S' handling algorithm. I've fixed that now, result is a slightly (upto about 1 dB) bigger volume drop of mid frequencies during loud 'S' sounds, but less distortion.

I don't know if the current setting (100%) is good or now - still need to check it. (Feedback is of course welcome; it's probably also a matter of taste).

hmm .. +200 is still ok... must check it tomorrow again..

edit:
What is this 'artifact' at ~58kHz, it's there for some time.

I don't see anything? How/where/when?

ST Standalone, Vac 192kHz output, RDS Off, ...

Mostly caused by lows.

edit:
Highs are somehow too much closed by loudness..
Maybe this is intentionall but there is room to 100% to be nicely clipped by loudness and hard limit to around 98% - currently avarage for loud 's' is 90%.
(fm mode - testing)

1. Odd, I don't see it in Stereo Tool's own frequency output window. Will check with an external tool.

2. Eh, what do you mean exactly? The highs should fill up everything to around 100% just like any other frequency - and as far as I've seen they do. How did you see/measure this 90%? That would be quite a big drop...

1. Actually sometimes i see it in ST graph too.

2. Picture with loudest 'S' sound, (any highs same). This is even with Composite limiter at 105%. so boosted bit...
It's around 90% .. insted to be around 97-98 (can't know that now) .. it's going into volume drop.
Seems "HARD LIMIT" is doing part of this too.

Can also see it a bit. Seems like a 3rd Harmonic of the 19KHz , meaning 57KHz
Changing RDS output to 0% doesn't solve it. Can you try that Mr Bojcha if it is the same?

Hi Luke..
It's more 58kHz .. you can see (and measure) on pic..

Maybe you need to check your sampling settings ;-)
Hans is using 176400 Hz and not 192000 Hz

The spike I see at 57KHz is at -70 or -80dB so that is to be neglected
