Hello!

Once I bought a DVB-T+DAB+FM USB dongle tuner like this one: http://www.dx.com/p/rtl2832u-r820t-mini ... DVeBfmsVqV, for monitoring purpose specifically.

Don't know if you are familiar with software called SDR Sharp. I've noticed there is a variety of software for RF monitoring using modified driver for this device so I decided to give it a shot. Just take a look at the screens! :)

Works like a charm!

That is how I am making my mesurement for along time (as the saying goes "No Money, No Honey") because i can afford to buy a mod monitor. I made my own mod monitor as well in gnu radio if you want i can publish the files (but only runs on gnuradio + some problems with stereo channel seperation ).

Sir, believe me, that I can understand. But for me radio is a hobby so I try to make it as inexpensive as possible ;) Regarding the main topic - I also have modified tuner so that I can take out raw MPX signal and pass it through line-in of my tiny HTPC (itx-based built with ALC892), and then analyze with MPX tool (not yet fully calibrated, but I'm on it). I do it on a regular basis when checking FM presets in ST.

Could you please send me the files you mentioned? Can be via PM if you prefer or post it here, so that anyone can use it. I have minor glitches with that sdr sharp and my tuner dongle - don't really know what causes it, but occasionally there are harsh sound interruptions and clicks like static or something (or out-of-buffer stuttering). Also frequency reading is offset by 10kHz or so (but there is correction for that).

Kind regards,
Slawomir

If someone is interested in other, similar software:

HDSDR:

WRplus:

The latter has the best sensitivity and really decent FM demodulator of very high quality FM signal. Unfortunately it supports sound output sample rate only up to 48 kHz. So you can't pass this signal through VAC into MPX tool.

But you CAN do this with HDSDR, which is not performing MPX demodulation.

EDIT: YUP! Confirmed - works :) So no need for modified tuner anymore! HAHA

HDSDR -> VAC 192 kHz 24 bit -> MPXtool :)

I don't have a problem publishing my files. BUT THEY ONLY RUN IN GNURADIO AND THERE ARE DE-EMPHASIS AND STEREO SEPARATION PROBLEMS !!!!

If you don't mind these things then ok i will publish them.

If you want a cheap one, look for the Pira analyzer. About 200 euro and (much) more accurate than some others that I have seen that cost around 1000...

Just to make clear, I didn't want to offend you in any way :) As you see I am also a radio enthusiast, not professional, therefore I try to solve my radio-related problems using the cheap, yet as scientifically appropriate methods as only I can get. I've convinced myself on numerous occasions that conquering multiple issues by yourself lets you understand things better. I am very happy to hear that you have very similar approach.

I also appreciate your suggestions, Hans. Is it this one, by the way? http://pira.cz/fm_broadcast_analyzer/p175box.htm
looks like it is unavailable now anyway.

Looking at their brochure, these boxes seem to use some kind of similar applications I've presented here (when you connect them to the computer). For example I know RDS spy and it is freeware for sure.

Yes that's the one. Time to time they are out of stock. And it's great small unit.
