Simplest thing you can have is:

- Player (for example Winamp) with Stereo Tool as plugin.
- In Stereo Tool, configure 'FM Sound Card' output to Realtek, and enable pre-emphasis, RDS and stereo coding.

Make sure that the Realtek sample rate is set correctly (4x that of the Winamp input, either 176400 or 192000 Hz). That's it.

Win10 should be fine, but please check which version you get - some will automatically update regularly with no way to even postpone it!

Furthermore, if you want to confirm the soundcard is sending mpx signal, you can use another machine with 192 kHz input and decode it using line in and mpx tool (or record it using line-in and decode with mpx tool). This part is no biggy ;)

Tricky part is that Realtek = calibrate and usually adjust for tilt

And forgive my density again... unfortunately the ST project was derailed when our station suffered a burglary, and naturally they took most of the computers (but not the main automation!). Gone, of course, was the 1 week old Marian.

Is it possible to use a 1/8 stereo output (from computer) to make an MPX signal? Or will I need a better sound card? I suspect the latter.

Yes, that works. I do it all the time for testing. As said above, you do need to calibrate it - but once that's done it works fine.

I haven't seen a 1/8" stereo to BNC cable, just mono... ?

You only need one channel for MPX obviously if you aren't doing anything special. You could even make the cable yourself if you really need to have two BNC connectors at the other end :D

I usually use a minijack to 2x RCA cable, and a plug from RCA to BNC.

Guys, I really appreciate you walking me through this. I may try this because I really wanted ST to do all my processing eventually

My engineer had an alternative which was to route the sound via my ST computer but let my FM transmitter produce the MPX signal. I assume though that XLR output isn't enough to use the "full" ST features.

Not using MPX from Stereo Tool will generally cost you about 2-3 dB in loudness, mainly in the high frequencies. So, you should really use it!
