I am a first-time poster here, although I've been experimenting with Stereo Tool for around 6 months in advance of starting an online radio station but in vintage-sounding AM processing.

For months I've been listening to the stream around the house, in the car, etc., as I built the library and tweaked the content. Up until a couple of weeks ago it sounded fine. I've been using the Dull Moose DENSE AM Europe setting all the way down the line.

I realize even typing this that this is subjective thing and my ears might be playing tricks on me but I feel like suddenly around 2-3 weeks ago my audio got an unpleasant upper-midrange distortion to it, with what sounds like a slight loss of bass and a tip towards a brighter sound as well...a "crunchy" sound is the best way I can describe it. I've checked the signal going in and it is fine, and I've reinstalled everything, etc., trying to find the source of this.

Is there any reason the sound would change? Again I realize there's always a chance it's always sounded like this and I just realized it a few weeks ago. Either way, what would you suggest to tweak to possibly deal with the distortion? I understand there is some distortion inherent in the amount of processing involved but this isn't that.

Any help is appreciated - I haven't licensed the stream yet so am not comfortable posting it just yet.

Hi,
It only can change if you accidentally touch some settings or you updated StereoTool at some point.
To fix that is really hard to any of us since we don't know what we are dealing with. Also You seems have some custom adjustments to make it to sound like that.
So best would be to post preset you are using and also tell us what exactly verison is ST you are using. Some example track where distortion or whatever occures would be usefull too.

Actually, as it turns out, the windows mixer settings were at a different sampling rate than everything else, which seems to have been causing the distortions. I'm not sure when/how that happened.

But around the same time I switched from the VST plug in to the standalone Stereo Tool, thinking they performed the same when I load the same preset. But I'm realizing with the VST version with the AM preset I'm using I'm getting a hard cut off at -6db and nothing above it, and with the plug-in there are frequent peaks over it, plus what sounds like a bit more top end, which isn't what I'm after. I plan to compare the two screen by screen later tonight to see if I can figure out why they aren't performing the same when I load the exact same preset.
