Well, not exactly. Here's how it goes .. with proper filenames:

Load from scratch: dsp_multiple.dll
(this is the best one out there, bar none)

inside that load: dsp_stereo_tool.dll
(or any other DSP you wish)

then load: dsp_vst.dll

inside that load: EffectChainer.dll
(it's a VST stacker)

inside that load: aqualizer.dll
(or any other VST you wish)

Note: You might have trouble finding dsp_multiple.dll, because their website is now offline. You can send me a PM and I'll get a copy of it to you via email. I'll also send you the most stable version of dsp_vst.dll.

I know this sounds complicated .. but, it's not. It's just layered.

Winamp --> Load Multiple DSP -->
....................................... \ --> Load VST Host --> Load Effect Chainer --> Load VST's


It's a breeze, once you get the hang of it.

Getting back to the topic title: making it 'louder' without overdriving mixer

What you're tring to achieve is Maximum Peak Volume coming from your soundcard to the mixer.

There are several factors (variables):

1. Achieve Zero db Peak from Audio Processor
2. Adjust Sound Card Output Level
3. Adjust Pre-Gain on Hardware Mixer.

Because every mixer is a little different .. try this:

a. Adjust Pre-Gain on Hardware Mixer to middle
b. Adjust Winamp Volume to Maximum
c. Adjust Windows Mixer - "Master Volume" to middle
d. Adjust Windows Mixer - "Wave Volume" for suitable reading on Hardware Mixer

OK, I'll give that all a shot. I know I don't know a fat lot about gain structure. Plus I'm using a laptop which, while pretty powerful and fast probably doesn't have the greatest soundcard in it.

I found it best to put VST plugins in a seperate folder under the Winamp plugins folder.

Then you can navigate to the VST folder and find the VST you want.

That way, you don't get DSP's mixed with VST's.

Navigation:

C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins
C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\VST

I'm still downloading some of this new stuff, so I'll see how I get on with it.
Meantime I have another issue perhaps someone could help with please.

I have some music files that I have saved on my PC as WAV files and I wanted to put them on my laptop and make a winamp playlist from them. Trouble is, I have software now that will burn WAV to CD, but when I put the CD in my laptop, it seems I can't transfer the wav files. All I can do is open the folder and click on a shortcut to the track on the CD and play it from there. I don't even know now if what I have on the CD is actually a wav file or if it has saved itself as CDA format. It's very frustrating and I was hoping someone could help please, because I definitely do not want to play live relying on a crappy CD for some of my instrumentation; I want it on my hard drive and preferably as a WAV file.

OK, here is an edit to the last post. I have downloaded everything and here is what I have in DSP/Effect plugin window for Winamp:
Nullsoft DSP
dsp_multiple_dll
stereo tool
analogx vocal remover
dsp_vst.dll
4frontEQ10 (Yohng 10-band)

I don't see the chainer, although I do have the effect chainer DLL in C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins
I also don't see the Aqualizer although I put a copy of the DLL in the plugins folder. Perhaps VSTs are treated differently in that respect. Maybe not seeing the chainer has something to do with not seeing the Aqualizer?

I also want to remove the vocal remover from the Multiple DSP setup window and change the order of some things (as well as adding the missing dlls when we find them). The Set DSP Load button on Multiple DSP Plugin window says to rearrange them I need to deactivate them all then reselect plugins. I can deactivate them by doubleclicking (is that a DOG with a red line through it to indicate inactive???) but I can't see how to add them back in. If I click on another plugin, the Multiple DSP window goes away.

Also, in the new plugin order you sent me, you have the aqualizer (which is a 31 band EQ) AFTER the Stereo Tool plugin. But I thought I should have the EQ coming before the Stereo Tool?

There are two main ways to burn a CD. One is CDA format and the other is Data Format.
If it's in CDA ... You'll be able to play it in any CD Player.
You have to load effect chainer from within dsp_vst.dll

Then from within effect chainer .. load your VST's.

Look at the flow graph I made for you in the above post.
Thats a Lama with a red checkmark on it - and it means that the plugin is active.
To deactivate, double-click until no red checkmark is on the plugin.
You can place it however you like - I was only giving an example.

For maximum loudness, put Stereo Tool as the last filter in the chain.

By the way, there's also a VST plugin version of Stereo Tool. You could ditch Winamp and go completely VST instead...
