Usually compressors release to 0 but some release to the signal. Assuming that ST does the former is it possible to simulate the latter?

It already does that (in Analog mode).

Nice, that should make it easy.

Since there's no online help for the analog compressor, some questions:
  1. With maximum ratio and other settings equal, the analog compressor has 3 dB less reduction for white noise in peak mode than the digital one. Why (non-standard peak measurement)? Which one is right?
  2. What are the peak mode slider and lowpass for?
Edit: I found out that the lowpass is for the control signal. Does this interfere with the sidechain?
