Bit depth restore filter.
I think I can - with only small changes - change my declipping filter to do something completely different: Remove noise upto a precisely defined level. This would, if I understand things correctly:
- Remove that noise
- Restore soft sounds that are sometimes temporarily inaudible (same as in declipping filter, if it's too soft and no dithering is used this should restore it!)
This could be used as follows:
1. Determine noise quantization level (minimum step between adjacent input levels).
2. Find the optimum waveform that fits at the input wave form +/- quantization noise level.
This could be used to gain a few bits (eg. 16 -> 20 or so. Or even 8 -> 12... Maybe less).
