I'm also into this idea. I've been learning more about VBAN lately and have been testing it for lower latency home network streaming than the icecast protocol tends to allow. It's pretty good!

BTW, there is a fork of the VBAN repository for Linux that actually works bi-directional with JACK.

I believe it's fully lossless audio. I haven't read about its compression techniques yet though.

However, I'd wager most people who use virtual cables for non/semi-professional applications likely already have it installed as it's a part of Voicemeeter (basic, banana, potato, etc); the VBcable package that contains multiple devices and a mixer.
