Post subject:  9.37 Bass Clipping Not Strict

Hi Hans,

I have loaded up 9.37 on Windows to further tweak an existing preset for streaming (this one is not FM).
During this process, I have discovered bass clipping is not working as expected.

To clarify, my understanding of bass clipping is it can be set strict to not allow any bass above (x)dB level.

I have a preset which sounds fine, except that I would like to have more control over songs with deep bass, preventing the overall bass between 60-120Hz from exceeding -6dB.

After playing with this for the last 4 hours, in different combinations, I have not been able to configuring accurate bass clipping with the desired setting.

I am running Processing -> Bass Effects -> Bass Clipper with the following settings:
Shape: Soft
Overshoot: 1.0
Drive 3.00dB (I do this to add bass for older tracks lacking bass)
Threshold: -6dB
Input lowpass frequency: 100Hz
Input lowpass slope: 12.0dB/sec
Output lowpass frequency: 100Hz
Output lowpass slope: 12.0dB/sec

It's clipping, however even in Shape:Hard it's still letting through bass right up to 0dB.

I've then attempted to hard clip using Advanced Clipper -> Distortion -> 1st Bass Filter -> Pre-Bass Clipper.
I set this hard to clip anything above -6dB with strictness set to maximum (10).

After playing some audio samples and running them through the spectrum analyzer bass is still peaking at 0dB.

Am I missing something here ?

How do I enforce tighter bass clipping ?

A penny for your thoughts please.

Many thanks,

BeDazzler.

If you want stricter bass clipping then you should first of all disable Overshoot softness. That lets through overshoots on loud bass, which prevents adding too much harmonics. But it also results in more bass being let through.

Hi Mathijsco,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have tried that and many other combinations with the Bass Clipper, even turning it off and then forcing the Advanced Clipper to restrict bass, however that does not work.

delay clipping?

Hi Bojcha,

I normally run 0.012-0.015 to create a bit more punch, but I wouldn't expect delayed bass clipping = little/no bass clipping.
