Post subject:  A more consistent sound, but not a strong AGC, as seen on TV

Hi,

i have a question, but i am not sure how to do that with stereo-tool.

The Sound is quite excellent. But i need a sound similar the the sound of the R 128. I don't need the exactly sound of it, but some similar. my problem is the following: i have a audio track of a self made video. there are some level differences, but also some quieter parts. i have now the problems, that the AGC is to aggressive to the sound, and quickly. that means, i will have in the new file some level differences. the louder parts should be limited, but the quieter parts, should not be limited to the ceiling. i am not sure how to do this correctly. the sound comes across far too aggressive.

maybe i am to stupid for finding the correct settings of the AGC, but in the latest beta i have some problems with it... here is my STS File, which i used for the control.

PS: I wanted to post this topic in the forum "Getting the best sound", but here I could not add file attachments. So the question is here now.

R128 doesn't do anything to the sound except normalizing it (the tv version of Stereo Tool "does" R128). Engineers that do audio for tv sometimes do the whole R128 thing manually - so there doesn't necessarily have to be any processing at all!

Is that really true? But I've already read that, for example, the television channel "Arte" uses an Orban processor. But again back to my question. Do you think that you can achieve a smoother sound with automatic volume control? without making soft sounds at the same volume? I mean based on the basis of some parameters? because actually is not supposed to be absolutely everything always identical. maybe there are options already, and I have not found it yet.

Hello,
When you turn down the pre-Amplifier- slider, so that the gain reduction under normal cases is close to 0dB, then you should have the desired effect, that only the too high-levelled parts are attenuated and the soft passages are not affected. Combined with a upspeed of approx. 0.5dB/s it should be ok. If you have a very subtile MB- Processing it can be good to turn the downspeed down to 5dB/s or lower and use the jump protection or the postAGC- compressor for the level jumps. Then the system responses with quick "compression" to short loud passages.
Or did i misunderstand you? If so, then sorry.
Regrds,
Robert
