I had an interesting thing happen today when I was showing ST to some people.

I used a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 which I normally use in the lab.

The PC has a 4790K CPU and normally has no issues with ST no matter what configuration I use.

As the Focusrite Scarlett was just out of reach of where we were working I changed out its 1.5 metre USB cable for a 3 metre one. Reached perfectly.

Started ST and it kept reporting it was restarting the sound card, play for a second or so and then report a restart the sound card. I stopped and restarted ST and even rebooted the PC and still got the same errors!

While trying to figure out the issue I moved the PC and Focusrite Scarlett closer together and went back to the 1.5 metre USB cable and it worked without an issue from then on.

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the length of the USB cable that can be used for a USB interface like the Focusrite?

Thanks,

C.

There is a limit to the length of a USB cable, it's 3 (for low speed) or 5 (for high speed) meters. See also this question: http://superuser.com/questions/64744/ma ... -usb-cable

What happens if you try to play unprocessed audio to your Focusrite and the 3m cable (so without ST, just with a normal media player like VLC)?

USB cables has usually VERY bad wires inside.
There is high quality cables and priced well. However sometimes even when on box says it's high quality, it's just not.
