With 'AutoFixShape on' higher timing constants have higher shape values, so ST compensates the first few % or dB quicker but the last few % or dB slower, including that the definition point (86%) is reached to late.

What's the benefit of that?
Why don't we want 'AutoFixShape off' with both attack and release shape having the same fixed value?
If both timing constants are the same the shapes are identical, too. Why do we want higher shapes for higher timings in this case?

I think the reason is that when you increase Timing constants you want to have a slower correction clearly, but you may not want that a sudden loud Sound is compensated too slow.
So the slowdown is mainly for sounds nearer the target...

If you consider a car needing to travel a given distance in a given time then what ST with 'AutoFixShape' does is:
  • If the given time is short the car will drive with essentially constant speed for almost the whole distance.
  • However if the given time is long and you are in no hurry at all, it kick-starts and accelerates to hell first, before letting it run out slowly for the rest of the distance.
Who is driving a car like that?
