Post subject:  attack vs release balance

First feed the ST compressor 0s only as a reference point, then only 1s to observe the attack phase and then only 0s again to observe the release phase. Choosing the correct settings it's possible to find an attack level curve and and a release level curve that sum up to a perfectly straight horizontal line at 0.5, i.e. they have exactly the same speed and a perfectly symmetrical shape. So far, so good.

Now we use those 'perfect' settings from above but feed ST an alternating signal of 0s and 1s, i.e. the mean is 0.5 and the compressor would need to constantly switch between attacking and releasing.
Funny enough though the detected level is now way above 0.5 which probably means that staying in attack mode longer is preferred over constant mode switching.

Why is that so? Is it beneficial to miss the actual level in such a case?

PS I'm only talking about 'internal' level detection, not the actual output signal.
