Some question regarding phase delay:
  1. How much latency does the lookahead actually cause at some given quality setting?
  2. Does higher quality also mean higher workload or is it just more (free) lookahead?
  3. Does bigger delay need more lookahead to achieve the same quality?
  4. I do have an idea what the lookahead slope's for but are smaller/bigger values worse/better?

1. Depends on how much total effect you have and how steep it is. It's calculated dynamically.
2. CPU load is always the same.
3. Yes, see 1
4. Not really sure, might depend on the settings. Too small is bad. But too big might be suboptimal too.

OK, so for short the latency is about the same as the maximum delay at quality = 100%, maybe a bit more if the curve is steep and 2x that if quality = 200%?

And if latency doesn't matter one would want maximum quality and probably near medium slope?

The delay should be less than that, but I don't recall the calculation. Higher is better but at some point it doesn't make a difference anymore.
