I would love to be friends with my local community of FM employed audiophiles, but I can't because they're all "competitors", hence they can't be trusted.

It seems like a cut throat business because of how few people their are in the industry.

Am I alone in this feeling? Share your industry experiences if you don't mind.

Hey Spyder, interesting note. I'm from Australia, and from being unemployed for many years with some disabilities, I tried setting up a radio station, one that would play a large archive of music, and advocate for those with a disability.

Though my situation may be somewhat different to yours, for several years I had extreme difficulties finding paid employment, despite the successful completion of many courses and voluntary work experiences. I thought trying to have the right attitude and partaking as much as possible would get me into the work force, but unfortunately employers are scared about people with Asperger's Syndrome. I have never used it as an excuse to get special treatment, but more of an example of what one can do despite being on the autistic spectrum.

Having no luck, I thought I would investigate and try to start up my own radio station with my friends, we all had disabilities to varying degrees; we all wanted to contribute back to society, and wanted to have a radio station were we could talk about our issues, and play lots of good music to entertain others, rather then just sitting on welfare.

Unfortunately here in Australia, the idea of trying to do something noble for the community fell on death ears, and we were pretty much frowned upon, not only from the government, but even our local ministers, the broadcasting authority, and even our families thinking we were wasting out time. We all had set up studios, equipment, prepared, and digitally mastered thousands of tracks, printed promotional posters, flyers, and brochures to get the word out, and ultimately researched and published a 400 page submission for parliament, demonstrating the real need for such a radio station.

After 17 years the final straw came when my friends and I were talking about our radio licensing options in an internet chat-room. Somebody had dropped into the discussion and threatened to dob us into the government and clean us out, if under any circumstances we would start broadcasting. He and I can not say, but both of us suspect a moderate chance it was someone from the commercial FM radio industry.

This gave us an insight into what kind of people we were rubbing or perhaps not rubbing shoulders with. We have all left the industry, and left the radio spectrum to the government and their commercial radio buddies to mess around with, we were becoming frustrated and angry, and decided they were much more positive and more fulfilling things to do in life.

Sorry to hear about your situation, but yeah, radio is not a place where you'll find many friends. It's a very selfish corrupt industry I'm affraid. Everyone for the most part is in it for themselves.
