Post subject:  Help with complete studio setup for student radio

Hey everyone,

long story short, we lost the access to the universities really fancy broadcast studio (100k+) and now we have to setup our own.
So I would like to get some input on the necessary hardware + software. We got a budget of around 1200-1500€.

The feature list is:
live shows with two hosts
24/7 live stream with playlists by studio software
Music rotation
skype + optional: telephone integration

Thx for every help!!!

I'm assuming this is an online station so no consideration for transmitter/antenna etc.
Since you are doing a live show I assume you need a mixer.

Mixer with USB codec - 200 euros
2 mics - 200 euros (eg. AT 2020 USB/XLR)
2 mic stands - table top for 30 euros
2 mic cables - 15 euros
2 headphones - 30 euros
2 monitor speakers - 50 euros
3 computers (one for playout, one for production eg. Skype, one for streaming) - 300 euros
Hardware total = 730 euros

Now the hard - er, fun - part: software for automation and streaming:
Automation:
Free: Zara free (basic), RadioDJ; Rivendell (Linux)
Paid: StationPlaylist - about 600 euros for the pro version, less for other versions

Streaming:
Icecast/Shoutcast; or other options

Anyhow, that's a basic list to get you going...

ZaraStudio (paid version of ZaraRadio) costs 165 EUR. Also, ProppFrexx is quite affordable too (599 EUR enterprise, 449 EUR professional, 349 EUR premium).

If you are doing FM, ProppFrexx can send RDS texts directly to Stereo Tool if it runs as a plugin - there's a Stereo Tool-specific call that ProppFrexx supports. I expect mAirlist and GML to support something similar soon.

Thx, for your advices. We are only broadcasting trough web stream. So do you still feel we should spend the money on ProppFrexx or an equal software or spend more on the hardware?

I just mentioned it because someone mentioned ProppFrexx. I don't know enough about playout programs to say anything useful about it - and what you need depends a lot on what you're planning to do.

From someone here who has used RCS, NG, etc... SPL (Station Playlist) is an excellent starting point and well worth the price.

So much functionality and very customisable.

Configuring it to sound good on-air and on-line is relatively easy.

Supports FLAC, WMA, MP3, etc. RDS, remote voice tracking, streams and feeds in and out, automation, conditional rules, etc.

The scheduler is OK, not great (I am fussy) but it will get you going and works fine as a starting point.

Inetgrates perfectly with Stereo Tool - VST and and Stand-alone.

Ross provides fantastic support as well. He always replies to my questions, even the dumb ones where I ask how can I make the software do something it's not intended to.
