Hello Hans,
It would be great if the AGCs Gain Reduction speed within the window is not "0" but a (much) slower value than the main time constants.
Example: Main Attack time= 850ms Main Release time= 5000ms --> Window Attack time=5x Main Attack=1700ms, Window Release time=5x Main Release=25000ms.
This Factor should be configurable.
Kind Regards,
Robert

Can you explain the benefit of this ? I genuinely would like to know.
What do you experience with the AGC as it is now ? Does it not sound correctly ?

To my opinion the window function is implemented to get a more easy sound by halting the AGC within the set window.
In case the audio level varies outside the set window, the AGC is still acting with it's original attack and release times.

This is something completely different than setting it's attack and release time 5 times higher...which could cause the AGC to react completely different within the window.

The thing is, that when the AGC is completely haltet within the window you do not have exactly the same target level.
Example:
You have set the window size to 4dB.
After a (loud) a song with less dynamic starts with 4dB less in level, meaning the AGC is doing (as good as) nothing on the transition (still within the window) ---> 4dB less Multiband drive up to the point where the song gets queter for a short time. And when it is then loud again you suddenly have 3..4 dB more Multiband drive compared to the beginning of the song.

When it is only (much) slower within the window it will go over the time to exactly the same target level while still preserving more dynamics within the window because of the slower speeds.

Regards,
Robert

This is already (somewhere) on my todo list... It's definitely a useful feature.

Hans, just curious, can you explain what effect this will have ?

If you have a 2dB window you currently lose 2dB consistency. Say the target is -10 and the AGC is releasing from -14, it would stop at -12 because it enters the window. However if it would move more slowly within the window it would still slowly move towards -10 instead of getting stuck at -12. Something like this, anyway. So it would be useful indeed.

Thanks for your explanation Mathijs,
But imagine following concerning the above situation..just to get it straight.

The audio comes in and gets in the window at -12...so its switching to the mode described above and now it slowly crawls towards the -10db at a rate 5 times slower...Now a big volume difference kicks in, and due to the AGS's state it's attack time is 5 times higher and this results in a slow AGC response and big volume peaks will enter the multiband section for quite a long time (since the agc reacts 5 times later)

Will this result in a more 'dense' sound ?

No because the big difference is not inside the window so it wouldn't move slower.
