Post subject:  Stereo Tool 8.24 BETA

Hi all,

I have finally bit the bullet and spent some time (2 days actually... it wasn't that bad) to replace my old Windows-95 based sound card code by something newer, using a library that's also available on Mac and Linux. But before I go any further I need to know if what I wrote now doesn't break anything. Basically, settings from Stereo Tool 8.23 or older versions should work without change in this new code. But since it's impossible to test all cases (and I've already found a few unexpected things, they are fixed though) I want to get some feedback.

You might notice that WASAPI has been added to the sound card communication mechanisms, if everything is ok I'll try if I can also enable KS (Kernel Streaming) and DirectX Audio.

Windows 32 bit:
Windows stand alone: http://www.stereotool.com/download/ster ... 24-001.exe
Winamp DSP: http://www.stereotool.com/download/dsp_ ... 24-001.exe
VST: http://www.stereotool.com/download/vst_ ... 24-001.dll

Windows 64 bit:
Windows stand alone: http://www.stereotool.com/download/ster ... 24-001.exe
VST: http://www.stereotool.com/download/vst_ ... 24-001.dll

CHANGES:
- Removed old WINMM audio card code, replaced by PortAudio.

TODO:
- SST help
- Show low input level warning for inputs below - say - around -9 dB or so. For extended periods. Reason; I hear on a local station here that they probably have a too low input level and they didn;'t know that that was a problemn, but the sound on one of the built-in presets wasn't as consistent as it should be, and some tracks sound muffled probably due to too much noise gating.

Note: I haven't checked it yet, the code should still work on Windows XP...

I confirm that it works with no problem on XP (SP3)

Just little cosmetic correction. The value is under the text "Turbo" and is not looking good - may be next to it with some space.

Edit: I hope now the GAPs when enabling disabling some output, will be gone ? I mean when FM is enabled, when i enable Normal out.. it make a GAP on both places . Is it possible now to make it not act like that ?

The 64 Bit version does not contain the PortAudio Lib dll.

Ow! Oops. I see the 64 bit version was set to dynamic linking. Will run a rebuild during lunch...

I was also getting hiccups, and when looking into that, I found that the input thread was using a full core. That's fixed now too, will be ok in the next build.

Sorry it doesn't belong to actual Topic, but:
The step-size of the AGC Matrix Controls ("Reduce Stereo" and "Mix L+R into L-R" is too coarse.
Now step size is: 10% for fine adjustment (left-right arrow keys) and 100% for coarse adjustment (up-down arrow keys).
Should be: 1% for fine adjustment and 10% for coarse adjustment.
Even with mouse fine adjustment is hardly possible now.
Thanks,
Regards,
Robert

Reading this

http://www.sm5bsz.com/linuxdsp/hware/sb ... ternal.htm

it seems that portaudio slightly degrades the soundcard performance (dynamic range) vs. MME.
Tested here for an SB Live Card.

Robert

Hm, I would need to test if that's the case in my code as well. MME only supports 16 bits anyway... so I'm not too sure.

New build, CPU load on the input thread was 100% in the previous version! The 64 bit builds failed, I need to look into that.

The input level indicators sometimes briefly flash bright yellow instead of the normal green. What does this mean?
