Stereo Tool

Bleeeh I didn't mean standalone specifically.
Just meant getting any form of stereo tool to process all the audio sent through my sound card.

I just tried breakaway and was sooo happy that I made a tutorial!
Break away is a lot easier to use that VAC, and seems less crash prone?

Thanks for all the info though, I didn't know about those programs. I have no use for them now, but Im sure something will come up.

Didn't know that.
It's a lot easier to setup that VAC.
The GUI is more informative and its easier to change sources.

With VAC I had to repeatedly reset the default audio device, or turn off all the audio before making any changes.
Breakaway makes changes to the audio devices even when there is audio playing and it manages to reconnect to the audio without any problems.

Also it doesn't have the annoying demo voice that VAC has.

I don't remember what the delay was in VAC but with breakaway i have a 100-200ms delay.

For the record, Breakaway's "pipelines" can be usen only with Breakaway products ! If you try to use it with other then breakaway, Pipelienes will play "noise".

I never saw all those issues with VAC - but on the other hand, I haven't used it much because my sound card already supports a similar feature - I can choose to reroute audio inside my sound card driver.

Yes, the Breakaway Pipeline is based on VAC ($ !).
Breakaway Live unregistred trial version had its own demo voice every 30 minutes, too.
But then I have convinced Leif to disable this demo message as long as Breakaway Live is bypassed:

So with Stereo Tool (and with a little bit background knowledge about sound processing) there is no need for Breakaway Live's processing.

Though I have to say that Breakaway's oscilloscope is much better IMO and you can set it to show the signal before Stereo Tool processing (or other DSP or VST) and post Stereo Tool processing ( select left input and left output with right mouse button options inside the oscilloscope graphics).
And this works also in bypassed mode !

I don't like the Stereo Tool oscilloscope.
When you look at it there is something I call instability.
It looks as if there is a fast left/right scrolling (switching its direction every other second).
When I look at this for a few seconds I get seasick.
That's why I turn Stereo Tool's oscilloscope off and use the Breakaway oscilloscope instead.

So, Hans is there a way to make Stereo Tool's oscilloscope more stable (without this odd scrolling effect) ?

ST Scope is, more actually "moving wave".

Yes, yes, yes !
But to me it is annoying, because it seems as if one second the waveform moves (scrolls) from left to right and the next second from right to left, and so on.

Is this a problem of my eyes (and/or my brain) only, or does anybody here see this constant direction change (left->right to right->left and back again), too ?

Hm, actually this was on my todo list a long time ago. But I forgot about it...

What should the correct behavior be? Find the loudest tone, and then lock that tone? Or the loudest bass? Or something else?

Hans, you are the expert and not me.
But maybe it helps when you compare it with the Breakaway oscilloscope.
Maybe you can figure out what is the main difference !?
Or compare it with foobar2000's built-in oscilloscope (this scrolls too, but without direction change).

The Breakaway oscilloscope is definetly more stable (without any scrolling effect).
Though I have to admit that Stereo Tools oscilloscope seems to have more finer details (higher resolution ?).
So no doubt, if you can fix Stereo Tools oscilloscope somehow (remove this instable scrolling effect), it will be superior to Breakaway's.
