Post subject:  Optimod!!!

Hi there,

I am interested in using Stereo Tool on my air chain but I am looking for that ballsy Optimod sound! I have played with various Sound Solution presets one which in my opinion comes very close to the Optimod 8400 sound. Has anybody got any for Stereo Tool they would like to share?

Kind Regards,

Hot Radio

I'm not sure about a preset . But you might be able to do it yourself. I wanted a similar sound when I was using an older software MBL4, all I did was crank up the attact times on the multimad limiter of the low and high ends and cranked the middle frequencies just a tad. This seemed to give me a much deeper souind much like the old anolog optimods. I'm sure stereo tool has a similar setting somewhere.

You can try this. I did it real fast. I'm sure you know about the transmitter setting Pre-emph of 50 or 75 us or none depending on your transmitter. This preset is based on what I had on MBL4 higher attacts at the bass and high frequencies. Seems to have that deep and crispt sound. You can prob fine tune the preset some more.

Another thing to watch out for that I have noticed on software sound proccessing is on the computer speakers and even head phones due to their frequencie range, might sound way off. like its to thin or not enough bass. I have had the error to go by this, cranking up bass and what not to find out once broadcasting that sound was way to much bass. So best thing to do is if it sounds flat on the computer try it with the transmitter. Cars usualy have good stereos, and you can compare your bass and whatnot to the other big stations.
Have fun!

Here are some more tips for good sound. The big thing is on any audio processor if you feed it junk audio, it will come back as amplified junk, There is not one processor that can make everything sound great just like magic but there are ways to help over come this. One way is make sure all your audio files are normalized to a studio value , This may very from application just use your judgment and don't over drive the processor -10 db is a good input drive. As for stereo tool just use your windows volume control to adjust the gain till you see your input audio peek at about half in the visual.

If you have no clue how to normalize all your source files, there are lots of free direct x and vst plugin that work with programs like Cool edit and SoundForge. One that I use myself,But it's not free but I find works great is PSP vintageWarmer2 vst Plugin. This is a 2 band Compressor and setup with one of its default soft limiting preset does a great job at Normalizing audio files and adding a small punch but nothing to over. To much compression doesn't sound good.

One way to normalize all your files in one shot is the batch file converters in applications like soundForge. You select your input folders then select the vst plugin effect along with the preset you would like to use. And you can set up the source files to output in 44.1 kHz PCM wave. The files are a little bigger then MP3 but with today's big HardDrives and much improved sound cards its really worth it!

One good thing I like with Vintage Warmer is it doesn't ad or take away any pre-emphasis so the once converted wav files will not sound all messed up playing in broadcasting processors such as Stereo Tool.

This is how I do it and it sounds just fantastic on air. To my opinion it is a superior sound then the optimod, because I have that boom and crisp sound in every file. It's a perfect sound. And I can't seem to hear distortions, And that is what I don't like about the Optimod. They have "The Sound" but lots of files even without distortion seems to have some. To most ears it sounds fine. But drives me nuts LOL!

Hope this helps

So you prefer the sound of an Optimod over an Omnia?

I don't like the dirtiness that Optimods give. They may add some "punch", but they tend to muddy up the audio response a bit.

I like the cleanliness of Omnia processors, plus you can get about 1.5dB more out of them on the average, from my experience, without harming things too much.

I call the Optimods "bass bass bass, muddy bass, squashed highs" processors...

Omnia-6 is still my favorite production audio processor, to this day. (Excluding Stereo Tool, of course!)
